How to make messages disappear on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp messages have been a major part of our life lately, right from starting a head-to-head to a heart-to-heart. But when these messages are of no use it is easy if they disappear on their own rather than our need to clear them now and then.

WhatsApp has recently introduced the disappearing messages feature in the app. Yes, now you can make your messages disappear on WhatsApp, but it’s still an option. You can enable the feature at your convenience.

“Our goal is to make conversations on WhatsApp feel as close to in-person as possible, which means they shouldn’t have to stick around forever”, WhatsApp mentioned in its blog.

When the feature is enabled, messages with a friend will disappear exactly after 7 days. While in one-to-one chat either of the person can turn on the feature, group admins will have control of the same for group chats.

Once enabled, only new messages disappear after the mentioned time frame, while previous messages will remain unaffected by the new update.

The messages will still disappear even if the user has not used the app for 7 days, yet may appear in the app’s notification preview.

There are still conditions like sharing the message from a disappear enabled chat to a non-disappearing chat, then the message will still be visible after 7 days and backups taken before the messages disappear will still include the disappearing messages.

Media in these chats will be available in the gallery if auto-download is turned on, otherwise, they disappear from the chat in 7 days as well.

While this new feature may or may not have any use, it is clear that a user needs to be cautious too, especially with business chats and chats that may serve as proof to your conversation.

It is suggested that we take a screenshot in case of such chats.

How to enable the disappear option for your chat

Go to the particular person’s chat with whom you want to enable this feature and turn Disappearing messages on.

Although this feature is similar to what has already been in practice in apps like Wickr, Messenger, and Telegram, the need, efficiency, and customs in WhatsApp is yet to be proven.

The feature rolls out in November 2020.
